Five tips from Dr. Slaviša Milanović on protecting veins during the summer

We advise you to follow simple measures during the summer, which can become part of your daily routine.

Avoid prolonged sitting and standing. Everyday obligations force us to sit or stand. Special attention should be paid to traveling by car or plane, long standing in lines, or sitting in a workplace or public place. Take a break, take a walk, rise on your toes so that your heel is off the ground and repeat this simple exercise several times. In this way, you activate the so-called venous pump, and the veins are relieved of excess venous blood in the circulation.

Cool down and protect yourself from direct sun exposure. At high temperatures, veins become sensitive, tend to expand, and this complicates already existing vein disease. Look for shade, do not expose yourself to direct sunlight. If you have the opportunity to swim in the sea, river or pool - take advantage of the opportunity. After getting out of the water, do not stay in the sun for too long. Cover your legs with a towel.

Wear comfortable clothes. Do not wear pants that will put pressure on the superficial veins. If you have pronounced problems with veins and were previously prescribed to wear elastic compression stockings or bandages, adhere to the therapy. However, if you are uncomfortable with this type of therapy or cannot tolerate it (socks or bandages that "fall off", cut, cause itching or increased sweating), consult a vascular surgeon about the justification of this type of therapy during the summer period.

When you have the opportunity to lie down, put any soft object under your heels (pillow, blanket) that will raise your legs and thus reduce the pressure in the veins.

Maintain a healthy diet without alcohol, excessive salt intake with good hydration or sufficient fluid intake. Do not forget that during the summer we sweat more and therefore it is necessary to introduce more fluids into the organism. The best choice is water.
